How to create the Wild Romance details

We used three techniques: crochet motifs that you sew on, surface crochet for stems and vines, and simple embroidery for the finishing touches. You only need basic crochet skills.

Flowerfields cardigan

1. Plan your design

Lay the cardigan flat and mark where each motif goes with safety pins or tailor’s chalk. Try it on in between to see how everything falls.

2. Crochet the motifs

US terms: ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet

5-petal flower

  • Rnd 1: Magic ring, 10 sc, join with sl st.
  • Rnd 2: (1 hdc, 3 dc, 1 hdc) in next st, sl st in next st, repeat 5 times. You now have 5 petals.
  • Add a few French knots in a contrasting color for the center.

Circles

  • Rnd 1: Magic ring, 6 sc.
  • Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st (12 sts).
  • Rnd 3: 1 sc, 2 sc in next st, repeat (18 sts).
  • Change color each round for a ringed look.

Medallion
Work as the circle, increasing 6 sts every round until it reaches the size you want. Change colors for the center, middle ring and outer edge.

Leaf
Ch 8. Starting in 2nd ch from hook: 1 sl st, 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Work 3 sc in the last ch, then repeat along the other side of the chain.

3. Surface crochet stems and vines

  1. Hold the yarn at the back of your work.
  2. Insert the hook from the front through the knitted fabric and pull up a loop.
  3. Insert the hook a little further along, pull up a loop and draw it through the loop on your hook (sl st).
  4. Repeat, following your line. Keep your stitches even and not too tight, so the knitted fabric doesn’t pucker.

4. Embroidery details

  • Chain stitch for the curved lines across the back
  • Running stitch or whipped running stitch for the striped lines in alternating colors
  • French knots and lazy daisy stitches for flower centers and small flowers

5. Sew on the motifs

  • Use a tapestry needle and the same yarn as the motif, so the stitches stay invisible.
  • Sew through the strands of the knitted fabric and keep your stitches loose, so the cardigan can still stretch.
  • Attach the large motifs first, then the small ones, and finish with the stems and vines so the lines connect nicely.
  • Keep the weight in mind: many motifs on a loose, chunky knit can pull. Choose lighter yarns for large areas.
